High Voltage Resistor

Resistor Cover Picture

The Resistor with Stand

Summary

I wanted to measure the output voltage of my DIY DC-high-voltage-source. However, with my multi meter, I am only able to measure up to 1000 V DC. The aim of this Project is to make a resistor that I can put in series with my multi meter to measure higher voltages.

The input impedance of my multi meter during DC voltage measurements is 10 MΩ Thus, to divide the voltage by 1000, the resistor has to be 10 GΩ. Of course the resistor also needs to withstand the high voltage. I bought 10x 1 GΩ resistors that can each withstand up to 10 kV. I connected them in parallel using a 3d printed fixture which I designed. The resistors are mounted 'upside-down' to decrease the leakage current. The total measured serial resistance is 10,116 GΩ. I tested the resistor in combination with my multimeter up to 90 kV. I noticed a lot of corona discharge during the measurement, however no full electrical breakthrough occured.
